:: Purpose Of The Project - Distinctly Cumbrian 2002 - 2008 | This programme is intended to help realise the partners' vision to "To regenerate and strengthen the rural economy of Cumbria by supporting the production, distribution and marketing of Cumbrian added value products"
Its specific purpose is to contribute to the regeneration of the Cumbrian rural economy in the aftermath of the FMD crisis. It will do this through the creation and enhancement of the rural infrastructure to support the production, distribution and marketing of Cumbrian added-value products through the 'Distinctly Cumbrian' virtual market.
The initiatives will promote the concept of local distinctiveness and niche market goods and develop effective supply chain networks to ensure that members of the public, local hotels and restaurants, visitor attractions and retail outlets have a ready supply of Cumbrian produce and products.
| | In order to achieve this purpose Distinctly Cumbrian has three Objectives | - Create an internationally accessible virtual marketplace that is backed up by ICT Networks within the supply chain, in order to overcome remoteness and connect producers to the markets for their products.
The project will research and pilot the direct-to-public virtual web retail site supported by 'Distinctly Cumbrian' Development Officers who will work with rural producers to establish the benefits, and to help with issues around product quality, consistency of supply and producer skills in ICT.
- Enhance the infrastructure for local production and distribution to enable local producers to meet demand created through Distinctly Cumbrian by working with existing wholesale distributors to extend their capacities or by setting up additional means of distribution.
The project will conduct a mapping exercise of existing and proposed distribution systems. A plan will be drawn up for the development of distribution systems for local, regional and national markets. This will also identify gaps in the provision of services and point up opportunities for joint working.
- Develop the capacity of producers by encouraging collaboration and co-operation and demonstrating new operating practices.
