:: Target Groups

These are 'producers of local products' where association with Cumbria as a 'distinctive brand' could facilitate growth. The project aims to remove some of the main barriers to growth experienced by these 'producers of local products'. The project will, therefore, target the following:
  • Existing rural businesses seeking to 'add-value' to their product through improvements to quality, developing niche markets, improving supply to customers, shortening the supply-chain, reducing 'product miles', or enhancing the contribution made by their product to managing the landscape, protecting the environment, supporting traditional communities, or enhancing visitor experience.£

  • New businesses seeking to develop products within the context described above.

  • Groups of businesses who wish to collaborate either formally or informally to provide such products.

  • Communities, who wish to work together to create, distribute or buy such products (such as trade associations, community purchasing co-operatives).

  • Private sector investors who wish to develop essential parts of the production, distribution and marketing infrastructure e.g. new abattoirs, bulk milk processing plant.

  • Existing businesses who are willing to collaborate with local producers in the distribution and retailing of local produce.

  • Corporate purchasers who can be persuaded to source a percentage of their requirements through local producers e.g. hotel purchasing groups.
